As students enter my classroom from the outside they will see a decorated door and a bulletin board of student work samples. I think it is very important to showcase student work because this shows them their work has value and allows others to see what is going on inside of our classroom. I would like to change the door decoration at least monthly as well and make it so that it depicts my class or what they are currently focusing on. This would be another simple way for outsiders to have a peak into our classroom upon entering.
Storage/Coat Rack: I have storage and a coat rack placed right by the door so that when students come into the classroom they can unload their things and place their belongings into their assigned cubby. This should help students stay organized and keep them from leaving their things all over the room.
Student Desks: Above I have the students at tables of four. I would seat the students in this manner because they can be grouped strategically. I can change their seats every month or every unit in order to meet student needs. This set up also allows for easy transitions to group work because they are already seated within a group and this would minimize their need to transport materials. I think that this is the best model for seating third grade students because they are never singled out or made to sit alone and can be put in a variety of seats.
Teacher Desk: I have placed the teacher desk at the front of the room. This way I can see all of the students and the entire classroom if I am ever sitting at my desk during class time. It is also very close to the SmartBoard where a lot of instruction occurs. This allows me to have easy access to my supplies and lesson plan materials at all times during the lesson.
Square Rug: I have a rug placed directly in front of the SmartBoard. I think this is very important when it comes to the elementary years. I find that whole group instruction can be easily facilitated at the carpet. This is where read-alouds and many other types of instruction throughout the day can occur. This also provides alternative seating for students who want to sit on the floor when working independently.
SmartBoard: I have the SmartBoard placed at the front of the room because I plan to use it as the students come into the classroom every day. They can check in, complete lunch count, and answer daily questions using the SmartBoard in the mornings. I plan to use the SmartBoard often to create engaging instruction and to expose the students to different types of technology.
Computers: I have two computers in the room. I want to have the computers for the students to use. They can become a station when needed and be used for independent work. I think that the students will be more willing to use the technology and learn more about it when it is readily available in their classroom.
Kidney Table: At the back of the room I have placed a kidney table with chairs around it. I can use this table for small group work, reading groups, alternative seating, etc. This table can be used for many different things and overall is multi-purposeful.
Easel/Sink: Towards the back of the room I have positioned an easel next to the sink. I think that it is important to encourage students to be creative especially when they are younger, so by having an easel in the classroom it allows students the use of yet another resource. This can be used in station work as well as individual work and is set next to the sink in order to allow easy access to art supplies. By keeping all of these things in the same corner it can make it easier for students to access the resources as well as keep it tidy.
Reading Corner: In the reading corner I have two library shelves that I can fill with books, two bean bag chairs for students to sit in, and a carpet where students can also sit and read. This section can promote reading and literacy by being a place where students can sit, read, and pick out different books. I think that this corner can be used for independent work time as well as becoming a station when needed.
